Why does weed make sex feel so good?

Cannabis directly impacts sexual experiences by interacting with the endocannabinoid system – a system of receptors that are located throughout the body, including reproductive systems and the pleasure centers of the brain. When tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) binds to these receptors, it causes dopamine (the main neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure) to be released at levels greater than normal sexual arousal. The neurochemical “rush” increases physical sensations while creating a greater sense of reward and enjoyment than usual. Similarly, cannabis also changes the amount of anandamide – “bliss” the body’s own version- which increases pleasurable sensations during our sexual interactions.

Sensory and Time Perception

One of the strongest effects cannabis has on sexuality is its ability to change our sensory perception. Users frequently report that tactile (touch) perceptions are amplified and they feel pleasure even when a light touch is applied. These effects also apply to all forms of physical contact, which in turn can enhance what would have been “normal” sensations. In addition, cannabis alters how we perceive time, which means that our pleasurable moments can feel longer than they actually are.

The Mindfulness Mechanism

Cannabis also has an automatic mechanism for sexual mindfulness because it temporarily inhibited activity in our default mode network in the brain, which is the area of your brain responsible for self-referential thinking and worrying (like, “is there something wrong with me?”). Several users suggest that cannabis can help silence the internal critic that might otherwise get in the way of sexual bliss, and allow them to connect more deeply with their own sensations and with their partners’ responses.

Physiological Effects on Sexual Response

In addition to psychological effects on sexual response, cannabis causes measurable physiological changes which can increase sexual pleasure. Cannabinoids cause vasodilation blood vessels to expand often increasing blood supply to erogenous zones and increasing their physical arousal. For women, increased blood supply can be beneficial to clitoral sensitivity and higher amounts of vaginal lubrication. In men, moderate consumption may help to prolong sexual activities by delaying ejaculatory reflexes through relating effects on the parasympathetic nervous system.

Strain-dependent Effects on Intimacy

Different varieties of cannabis provide distinct sexual effects through differences in their cannabinoid and terpene profiles. Limonene is a highly energetic, euphoric terpene with properties that foster passionate experiences; varieties with high concentrations of limonene are often desirable for this reason. Varieties high in myrcene or linalool create warm, calming feelings and are more pleasurable to slow things down and cultivate sensuality. THC and CBD balance is also significant; high THC tends to heighten physical sensations but can also lead to increased anxiety in users; CBD-balanced varieties tend to reduce inhibition without overwhelming psychological effects.

Communication & Emotional Connection

Cannabis often enhances emotional vulnerability while being intimate by dampening activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain that processes our emotions and fear. A perceived reduced amygdala response creates neurochemistry that enables many users to feel safer expressing desires and emotions that they might ordinarily suppress. The created vulnerability often enhances the emotional aspect of intimacy and turns a physical experience into something more meaningful.

Finding Your Balance

Cannabis offers plenty of prospects for sexual experiences, but the relationship between cannabis dosage and sexual satisfaction can be modeled as an inverted U-curve. Low to moderate doses of cannabis tend to encourage greater pleasure; larger doses can lead to sedation, disconnection, or even anxiety which can hamper sexual pleasure. Generally, individual differences in tolerance to cannabis, consumption methods, or biochemistry matter very much. The best experiences come from mindful exploration in order to ascertain personal ‘tipping points” where cannabis enhances sexual connection instead of overpowering it.
