Storing herb is not just about hiding your stash, but about holding on to its potency, flavor, and safety. Knowing how to properly store your marijuana can mean the difference between having premium flowers or disappointing degradation.

The Shelf Life Truth

Cannabis that is stored correctly should remain in good shape for between 6-12 months with some strains being viable for 2 years. That being said, THC starts to degrade immediately after it has been harvested and typically has a 16% potency loss within the first year, if stored correctly. After 2 years you can expect a loss of 26% potency, and around 40% of the original THC content within 4 years.

Although THC is a major compound in cannabis, as it breaks down, there is also terpenes- the compounds that provide aroma and flavor- to consider. Terpenes are more volatile than cannabinoids and they start breaking down in weeks if stored improperly – your weed will taste and smell flat.

The Environmental Enemies

Four primary factors will determine how long you can effectively store weed: light, air, temperature, and humidity. UV rays cause cannabinoids to break down faster than anything else. Even a short exposure to sunlight will degrade your supply more than months of improper storage.

Exposure to oxygen starts oxidation which starts converting THC into CBN, a compound that imparts sedation rather than a high. Temperature fluctuation induces condensation and condensation fosters mold – you could lose an entire stash overnight.

While humidity can be a balancing act, Trichomes become brittle and fall off below 55%, and mold and bacteria grow above 65%. The sweet spot is between 59-63% relative humidity (RH), where cannabis is still somewhat pliable and won’t develop further microbial growth.

Storage Options That Work

Glass jars are the best storage container for cannabis because they (unlike plastic) won’t generate static electricity (which strips away trichomes), and they won’t allow air to permeate. Mason jars are excellent, but there are specialized containers for cannabis that have additional features like UV protection and humidity control.

For long-term storage, vacuum sealing is the best way to store cannabis because it will provide a completely oxygen-free environment. Be mindful not to compress your flower too much when vacuum sealing it as you’ll damage the trichomes and diminish potency. Vacuum sealed cannabis can last 12-24 months if stored correctly.

Sign of Degradation

Maximizing Your Investment

Store cannabis in cool, dark places like a closet or cabinet, ideally in the 60-70°F range. Avoid areas like basements that struggle with humidity and attics with temperature issues. Don’t store cannabis in the refrigerator due to humidity changes, but the freezer works well for long-term storage for over a year.

When storing cannabis, keep each strain separate so flavors don’t cross-pollinate and the distinct terpenes will remain intact. Label containers with the strain and date stored to help keep track of how fresh your cannabis is.
